If you’ve never had a call on your mobile that hangs up as soon as you answer, then you can count yourself very lucky. Sometimes the call is made automatically by machines, the mobile number is rung and when you answer the machine will hang up.
This information is logged and passed on to companies who will try and sell you something over the phone. The machine will check if the number is active, and register whether the call is answered or if it rings out to answer phone. All this is to remove ‘dead numbers’ from the cold calling company’s call list.
Sometimes the call is from a withheld or private number, but other times a number will be displayed and captured on your mobile phone’s call log. If this has happened to you and you want to know who the number belongs to before you call them back, then WhoCallsMe is the place to go.
Whocallsme.com is a user supplied database of phone numbers. By going to the website and searching for the number you have in your call log, you can find out if it is a scam or a call from a genuine company. If the number you are checking isn’t registered then you can start your own thread and very soon a database is created for that number, as others who have also been called add their information to the thread. A simple idea, that works very well.
As for dealing with cold calls on your mobile phone, the following tips may be of use:
1. If you get a call from a withheld or private number, let the call ring out to answerphone. If the call is important, they will leave a message.
2. If you receive a call from a number you do not recognise, or one that is not stored in your mobile phone, again let it run to answerphone and see if you are left a message.
3. If you are plagued by cold calls, you can apply to have your number removed from ALL company databases, by contacting the Telephone Preference Service. Their number is 0845 070 0707 and their web address is www.tpsonline.org.uk Note, this does remove you from ALL directories, both the scammers and legitimate companies.
4. If you have a smartphone, you can buy software which can be set up to allow only certain numbers to call you, and which can block all unknown and withheld numbers from even getting through to you. A selection of call barring software can be found at our mobile phone software shop. Just click here and run a search for black list.
