The Samsung U900 Soul is the latest addition to the Samsung Ultra range. Encased in a metallic shell, the U900 Soul has a good sturdy feel in the hand. The design is a standard Samsung slide design, with a solid opening action, traditional to all Samsung phones. The u900 feels balanced in the hand and the operation is simple and straight forward, something that is becoming a trade mark of Samsung phones. The UI seemed snappier and better presented than on Samsung phones I have had experience with in the past.
The screen of the phone is a bright QVGA screen, 320 x 240 pixels. Measuring in at 2.2 inches and supporting up to 16 million colours. On the outside of the phone, with the slide closed, you will see in place of the traditional navigational buttons a type of touchpad, similar to those found on laptop computers. This proved to be a very effective way of navigating the phone menu. You dont slide your thumb to control a mouse as you would on a laptop, (I dont imagine it will be long before we find such controls as commonplace on a mobile phone) but instead you press on the icons on the display. These change intuitively depending upon the operation you are attempting on the phone. There is good haptic feedback when you touch the display, and it will also recognise long presses. The whole touchpad design is very well implemented on the phone, and is sure to be a major selling point of the U900.
The Samsung U900 also has a 5.0 megapixel camera, complete with autofocus and image stabiliser, to help you get the best shots possible. Picture quality is of an acceptable standard, and would rival many mid-range stand alone digital cameras. The handset also has a video record facility, and records at a very crisp QVGA resolution.
For your music entertainment the Samsung Soul has a full music player, supporting many music formats, including MP3, AAC, AAC+ and WMA. The phone also has a built in stereo FM radio with RDS support. RDS stands for Radio Data System and is used to send a small amount of digital information using standard FM radio broadcasts. This allows the phone to display, for example, the name, artist and album of the song currently being played, and possibly a playlist of the upcoming songs to be played on the station.
Connectivity wise the Samsung U900 has support for HSDPA Mobile Broadband, offering high speed downloads of up to 7.2Mbps on compatible networks. The U900 is also compatible with Bluetooth 2.0 which allows you to listen to your music from the phone to a compatible wireless headset.
The Samsung U900 Soul is set to be the top selling handset from the Korean manufacturer for 2008. Register your details here to be updated once further information is available.
