Nokia N78 Officially Announced

Today Nokia also confirmed the release of the Nokia N78. Again, this is a handset that we have suspected will be released today, at the start of the Mobile World Congress.

The N78 is officially the successor to the Nokia N73, one of the top selling NSeries handsets to date. The N73 has sold in excess of 50 million handsets worldwide, so the N78 has a tough act to follow.

The N78 is a neat style candy bar phone, with a styling similar to the N82. The send/end keys are similarly placed, and the keypad is is similarly designed, along with the soft option keys. The main difference is the whole keypad on the N78 is integral, just one whole plastic plate with each key defined by coloured sections. Hard to explain but you can see from the images below how it is all laid out. The numeric keypad looks a bit strange, and would appear to be uncomfortable to use, but in practice it is actually very comfortable.

The N78 has a 3.2 megapixel camera, like its predecessor, however the phone does include a geotagging option, thanks to the handsets GPS support. Geotagging basically stores details of location when you are taking a photo, so if you upload this to an online service the location details of the photo are passed on, too.

A novel feature of the Nokia N78 is the built in FM transmitter. This allows you to wirelessly connect your handset to a car or home stereo via FM. Devices that allow this are already available for some music players, but this is the first time a mobile phone has this capability built in.

Other features on the N78 include WiFi, HSDPA Mobile Broadband data transfer and support for Bluetooth 2.0.
